CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR OFFICER WRIGHT
An Extraordinary Display of Compassion, Unity, and Humanity at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility
Thursday, August 6, 2026, was an unprecedented and deeply meaningful day at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, Bravo Yard. It was a day defined by the swift actions of incarcerated individuals, their compassion for the loss of a member of their community, and their determination to honor his life through a special memorial event.
The gathering brought together incarcerated individuals and correctional staff alike to celebrate the life of a man whose life was cut far too short.
Mr. S. Wright, a 30-year-old correctional officer who had served the facility for five years, was remembered by his coworkers and fellow officers as respectful, kind, dependable, always punctual, and a good friend. These heartfelt words were shared during the open-mic portion of the ceremony.
At the front and center of the stage stood a portrait of Mr. Wright, beautifully created by incarcerated artist Ciriaco Valencia. Throughout the ceremony, incarcerated individuals shared heartfelt words, personal reflections, and meaningful memories, capturing the attention of everyone in attendance.
The Bravo Yard Praise and Worship Team filled the gymnasium with uplifting worship music as the crowd joined in song, creating an atmosphere of unity, reflection, and remembrance.
The Barbers4Change team also stepped forward, generously contributing their time, talents, and skills by providing haircuts and collecting donations for Mr. Wright's family. Six barbers worked tirelessly throughout the event, and not one barber chair remained empty. People gathered around the donation table, each making a genuine contribution in honor of a fallen officer whose memory will live on.
Through these collective efforts, a total of $708.00 was raised for the memorial fund.
A special appearance was made by Pastor Martin from Prison Fellowship Academy, who attended alongside his entire class to participate in this meaningful occasion. Their presence provided a powerful and teachable example of what community building truly looks like.
Numerous leadership groups and organizations also came together in support of the event, including Peer Support Specialists, LWOP Alliance, RISE, GOGI, SHINE, CGA, IPEP, and IAC.
The impact of this gathering was undeniable. The spirit of compassion and unity resonated throughout the gymnasium, creating a moment unlike anything many officers and custody staff had witnessed before.
On this day, one message rang louder than ever: The California Model works, and people can change.
Even behind prison walls, hope in humanity remains alive. This event demonstrated that positive change is possible when individuals take initiative, lead with compassion, and work together toward something greater than themselves.
What unfolded on Bravo Yard was more than a memorial. It was a powerful example of a thriving community taking responsibility, inspiring transformation, and making a meaningful difference. It was a moment that helped pave the way for other prison yards to follow.

Officer Wright's life touched many people, and this celebration demonstrated that respect, compassion, and humanity can bring people together regardless of the circumstances.
His memory became the reason people came together, but the compassion shown that day became the legacy of the community.
